Does dry food keep cats’ teeth healthy?
I do not buy this argument for a second.
We are told dry food cleans teeth because it is crunchy, but let’s actually think about what it is. Dry food is usually loaded with carbohydrates. And those carbs break down into sugar.
Sugar feeds the bacteria in the mouth, plaque builds, acids are produced, and teeth suffer. That is the problem. Not the solution.
So no, I am not convinced that a carb heavy biscuit is somehow the secret to good dental health in an obligate carnivore.
That is like me saying I keep my own teeth beautifully clean by eating Scotch Finger biscuits.
Because they are crunchy... Because I chew them. ecause obviously that is basically dentistry.
It is nonsense.
Crunchy does not automatically mean tooth cleaning. A biscuit is still a biscuit. And when plaque bacteria are feeding on carbs and sugar, that is hardly the great dental miracle people make dry food out to be.
Now yes, there are some specifically formulated dental products with actual evidence behind them. That is a separate conversation. But ordinary dry food sold as if it keeps teeth clean just because it crunches? No. I do not agree.
If you want to support better dental health in a more species appropriate way, there are far better options than a bowl of dry biscuits.
Feeding fresh raw food means less sticky starchy residue coating the teeth in the first place. Offering appropriate raw meaty bones where safe and suitable can help provide natural chewing action. Chewy chunks of fresh meat do more for a cat’s mouth than ultra processed cereal pellets ever will.
And of course, nothing beats proper dental care and regular checks when needed.
And honestly, is anyone else tired of noticing that dry food somehow ends up being the answer to every single feline problem?
Teeth, weight, digestion, urinary issues, boredom, begging, fussy eating. Amazing how the ultra processed carb heavy product is always somehow the miracle solution.
Convenient, isn’t it.
If dry food was such amazing dental care, we would not have so many cats with filthy teeth eating it every single day.
