Let's talk poop
Not glamorous. But one of the quickest ways to see what is actually happening inside your cat's digestive system.
When people switch to a properly balanced raw diet, one of the first things they notice is the litter tray changes. The stools get smaller. Much smaller. Firmer, more compact, and far less smelly. And many cats poop less often too.
If you are new to raw feeding, that can feel alarming. People are used to seeing daily deposits on other diets, so when the litter tray stays empty for a day or two, they assume something must be wrong.
In most cases, nothing is wrong at all.
Cats are designed to use animal protein and fat extremely efficiently. A balanced raw diet gives them very little they can't use, which means there is not much left over at the end. Less indigestible material going in means less waste coming out. A raw fed cat pooping once every two or even three days can be completely normal.
The smell changes too. Raw fed stools tend to be darker, firmer, and dry out quickly. Less fermentation happening in the gut, less waste sitting there producing that eye-watering litter tray smell people get used to on other diets. One of the least glamorous benefits of raw feeding. Definitely one of the most appreciated.
Normal versus constipation
This is where people get confused.
If your cat is comfortable, acting normally, eating well, and not straining in the litter tray - pooping less often is just a reflection of a more digestible diet. That is not constipation.
Constipation looks different. Repeated trips to the tray, obvious straining, discomfort, hard dry stools, very little coming out despite the effort. That is not the same thing as a cat simply producing less waste. If you are seeing those signs, something needs attention.
This only applies to a balanced diet
