What is Raw Meow Mix Low?
Raw Meow Mix Low is a meal completer specifically designed for cats that need a low-phosphorus, low-sodium diet.
Our mission at Raw Meow is to provide tools that make it simple to feed your cats a balanced, complete raw diet. Developed in collaboration with Australia’s leading animal nutritionist, Raw Meow Mix Low meets AAFCO standards and serves as a versatile meal completer that can be used with a wide variety of muscle meats.
Nutritional Benefits of Raw Meow Mix Low
Raw Meow Mix Low is carefully formulated as a low-protein, low-phosphorus, and low-sodium option. It contains added ingredients like pumpkin for beta carotene, spinach and wheatgrass for chlorophyll, vitamin E as an antioxidant, psyllium husk to promote regular bowel movements, and curcumin for its anti-inflammatory benefits.
At Raw Meow, we believe cats with compromised kidney function benefit from a species-appropriate, high-moisture, low-phosphorus raw diet. Reducing protein too drastically can lead to muscle loss, weight reduction, and overall dissatisfaction for your cat. With Raw Meow Mix Low, you can maintain lower phosphorus levels without sacrificing the necessary protein levels for a healthy, balanced diet. However, please consult with your veterinarian and conduct thorough research before transitioning a cat with health issues to a raw diet, as we do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.
How to Use Raw Meow Mix Low:
Preparation: Measure 45 grams of boneless muscle meat (meat must have been frozen for appropriate times). See our calculator to work out powder to meat ratio requirements if making more than one meal. See our YouTube channel to see prepping in action
Mixing: Add one scoop (approximately 3 grams) of Raw Meow Mix Low powder to the meat.
Hydration: Incorporate 1-2 tablespoons of water, or bone broth, to achieve the desired consistency. (Bone broth is a nutritious option, but please remember it will contain phosphorus. You may want to make a meat broth using some chicken thigh without bone instead)
Serving: Mix thoroughly and serve immediately.
For batch preparation, combine 1kg of boneless meat with 67 grams of Raw Meow Mix Low and 300ml (you can add more or less to your preference) of water. Mix well, portion into containers, and freeze (min 3 days, 3 weeks for wild caught meat). Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.
Important Considerations:
Meat Selection: Use only boneless muscle meat. Do not add additional organs or bones, as Raw Meow Mix Low already contains these components.
Feeding Guidelines: Adult cats typically require 2-4% of their body weight in food daily, divided into 3-5 meals. Adjust portions based on your cat's age, size, activity level, and health status.
Storage: Store Raw Meow Mix in a cool, dry place. Prepared meals can be refrigerated for up to two days or frozen for longer storage.
Suitability: Raw Meow Mix Low creates a very low phosphorus diet and is not recommended for healthy adult cats and unsuitable for, & should not be fed, to kittens.
Considerations for Cats with Low Phosphorus Needs
When feeding a cat that requires a low-phosphorus diet, both the type of protein and fat content are key. Raw Meow Mix Low is designed as a lower phosphorus completer, but it’s most effective when combined with low-phosphorus, higher-fat meats. Healthy cats typically need about 10% fat in their diet (30% DMB), and cats with kidney issues often benefit from a similar or slightly higher fat content. Be mindful that increasing fat too much can result in softer stools.
Our top recommendation is to use chicken thigh (with skin on) as the base protein, as it is one of the lowest-phosphorus meats available. For cats that don’t favor chicken, try adding a small amount of another protein to enhance flavor.
Avoid using high-phosphorus proteins like kangaroo, which also has low fat content, as it may not meet the nutritional goals for cats requiring low phosphorus.
When paired with chicken thigh, Raw Meow Mix Low achieves an approximate phosphorus level of 0.6% DMB, (1.1gm/kcal) making it an ideal choice for cats with low-phosphorus dietary needs.
