The Hard Truth. Your Cat Will Not Transition While Dry Food Is Still in the House.
If you are trying to transition your cat to raw but the dry food is still sitting in the cupboard… nothing is going to change.
Cats are incredibly good at waiting you out. If they know the kibble are coming back, they will simply hold the line. They are patient. Much more patient than most humans.
Cats are very good negotiators.
If they know the biscuits exist somewhere in the cupboard, they simply wait. Refuse the new food long enough and the old food eventually comes back. From the cat’s point of view this strategy works every time.
As long as dry food remains an option in the house, many cats will simply keep choosing it. Not because it is better for them, but because it is familiar, intensely flavoured and extremely easy to eat. Dry food is designed to be hyper-palatable and very consistent from bag to bag. That makes it very hard for a fresh food diet to compete while it is still sitting there as a fallback option.
Scientific literature on pet food palatability confirms that coatings such as “animal digest” and rendered fats are used specifically to increase acceptance and repeat consumption in cats and dogs. So when people say their cat is “addicted to kibble”, it is not just a figure of speech. These products are deliberately formulated to drive preference and repeated eating.
So people say their cat “won’t transition”.
In reality the cat is just waiting for the kibble to return.
Once dry food is removed completely, something interesting usually happens. The cat realises the menu has actually changed. At that point curiosity starts to kick in and the new food finally gets explored properly.
You do not have to rush the process. Transition can take time. Ava took months and still needs reminders after illness or a new batch of food. Oliver inhaled his first raw meal like he had been waiting his whole life.
But one thing stays consistent.
If the kibble are still in the cupboard, the negotiation never ends.
Sometimes the single biggest step in transitioning a cat to a fresh balanced diet is not finding the perfect recipe.
It is walking to the cupboard… and throwing the dry food out.
