The Hard Truth. Your Cat Will Not Transition While Dry Food Is Still in the House.
This is the one people do not want to hear. But it is also the one that makes the biggest difference.
If the kibble is still in the cupboard, the transition is not going to happen. Not really. You might get occasional nibbles at the raw, some promising moments, maybe a few days that feel like progress.
But as long as dry food is available, most cats will wait you out. They are very good at this. They understand, on some level, that refusing the new food has previously resulted in the familiar food coming back.
So they refuse. And they wait.
This is not stubbornness for its own sake. Cats are imprint eaters who default hard to what they know. But there is also something else going on with kibble specifically. The palatability is not accidental.
Manufacturers use rendered fats and additives specifically to make dry food intensely appealing in a way that is difficult to compete with while it remains an option. When people describe their cat as addicted to kibble, they are not being dramatic. The product is designed to be that way.
The moment the kibble leaves the house, something shifts.
It does not happen immediately. There is usually a period of indignation, pointed staring, and the kind of loaded silence only a cat can produce. But once they understand the menu has actually changed and is not changing back, curiosity takes over. They start investigating the raw. They start eating.
Transition speed varies. Some cats come around in days. Others take weeks. A small number take longer, particularly if they have been on dry food for years or if the transition is disrupted and they get access to kibble again - which resets the whole process. Consistency is the thing. Once the decision is made, it has to hold.
The hardest part of transitioning a cat to raw is usually not finding the right recipe or the right technique. It is removing the old food and not putting it back when the cat gives you that look.
